Die Trump-Administration plant massive Kürzungen im NASA-Budget, die besonders die wissenschaftlichen Missionen der US-Raumfahrtbehörde treffen würden. Nach Informationen von US-Medien soll das Gesamtbudget der NASA um 20 Prozent gekürzt werden, während die Mittel für wissenschaftliche Missionen sogar um 50 Prozent reduziert werden könnten.
Besonders betroffen wären die Bereiche Astrophysik, Heliophysik und Erdbeobachtung. Konkret bedeutet dies das mögliche Aus für das Nancy Grace Roman Weltraumteleskop, die Mars Sample Return Mission und die DIVINCI-Mission zur Venus. Selbst SpaceX-CEO Elon Musk bezeichnete die geplanten Kürzungen als „beunruhigend“.
Für Baden-Württemberg, mit seinen starken Forschungseinrichtungen und Zulieferern im Raumfahrtsektor, könnten diese Entwicklungen erhebliche Folgen haben. Nach Informationen aus dem Wissenschaftsministerium sind mehrere Kooperationsprojekte mit der NASA gefährdet.
Die offiziellen Budgetpläne werden in vier bis sechs Wochen erwartet. Im US-Kongress formiert sich bereits Widerstand gegen die drastischen Kürzungen im Wissenschaftsbereich.
